How Agar Powder Converter Works?

The Agar Powder Converter works by dividing grams of agar powder by 2.4 g per level US teaspoon. Agar is stronger than gelatin, so recipes call for small amounts.

  1. Confirm powder form

The 2.4 g value fits fine agar powder. Agar flakes and bars need 3 to 6 times more by weight.

  2. Enter grams

Type the weight, such as 2 g for 500 mL of liquid.

  3. Boil to activate

Whisk agar into cold liquid and boil for 2 minutes. Agar sets only after a full boil.

Agar Powder Converter Formula

The Agar Powder Converter formula is teaspoons = grams of agar powder ÷ 2.4.

tsp = g ÷ 2.4 | rule: 1 tsp (2.4 g) sets about 250–500 mL of liquid

  • 2 g of agar powder ÷ 2.4 = 0.83 tsp, about ⅞ tsp.
  • 1 g of agar powder ÷ 2.4 = 0.42 tsp, a generous ⅜ tsp.
  • 1 tsp of agar powder = 2.4 g.

What is Agar Powder Converter?

The Agar Powder Converter is a calculator that converts grams of agar powder into teaspoons. Agar (agar-agar) is a plant-based gelling agent extracted from red seaweed.

Agar sets at about 35–45 °C (95–113 °F) and stays firm up to about 85 °C (185 °F), so agar desserts hold their shape at room temperature. Vegan and halal cooks use agar in place of gelatin, with about 1 tsp of agar powder replacing 1 tbsp of powdered gelatin for a similar firmness.

What are the uses of Agar Powder Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Agar Powder Converter: vegan panna cotta, Asian jelly desserts, fruit jams, and molecular gastronomy.

  1. Vegan panna cotta

500 mL of plant milk sets with 2 g of agar, about ⅞ tsp.

  2. Jelly desserts

Japanese yokan and Malaysian agar-agar use 4 g of agar per 500 mL, about 1 ⅔ tsp.

  3. Jams

Low-sugar jams set with 1 g of agar per 250 g of fruit.

  4. Gel spheres and sheets

Chefs set flavoured gels with 1–2% agar by liquid weight.

Agar Powder Converter Measuring Tips
