How Baking Soda Converter Works?

The Baking Soda Converter works by dividing grams of baking soda by 4.8 g per level US teaspoon. Baking soda is about 4 times stronger than baking powder, so small errors show up as soapy flavour.

  1. Break up lumps

Press baking soda through a small sieve. Lumps leave bitter brown spots in cookies.

  2. Enter grams

Type the weight, such as 3 g for a batch of cookies.

  3. Measure level

Use the ¼ tsp or ½ tsp spoon and level flat. 3 g equals ⅝ tsp.

Baking Soda Converter Formula

The Baking Soda Converter formula is teaspoons = grams of baking soda ÷ 4.8.

tsp = g ÷ 4.8 | rule: ¼ tsp (1.2 g) per 125 g flour with 1 cup of acidic liquid

  • 3 g of baking soda ÷ 4.8 = 0.63 tsp, about ⅝ tsp.
  • 5 g of baking soda ÷ 4.8 = 1.04 tsp.
  • ½ tsp of baking soda × 4.8 = 2.4 g.

What is Baking Soda Converter?

The Baking Soda Converter is a calculator that converts grams of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO₃) into teaspoons. Baking soda is a pure base that needs an acid, such as buttermilk, yogurt, lemon juice or brown sugar, to release carbon dioxide.

Baking soda browns and spreads cookies and neutralises acid in batters. Excess soda leaves a metallic, soapy taste and a yellow-green tint in baked goods. Recipes use baking soda in small amounts, from ¼ tsp to 1 ½ tsp, where a 1 g error equals a 20% change.

What are the uses of Baking Soda Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Baking Soda Converter: cookies, buttermilk and yogurt batters, soda bread, and cleaning and deodorising.

  1. Cookies

Chocolate chip cookies use 5 g of baking soda, about 1 tsp.

  2. Buttermilk batters
