How Cream Converter Works?

The Cream Converter works by dividing grams of cream by 4.9 g per US teaspoon. Fat is lighter than water, so heavy cream weighs about 3% less per spoon than milk.

  1. Pick the cream

Heavy cream (36%+ fat) and double cream (48% fat) fit the 4.9 g value. Light cream sits close to milk.

  2. Enter grams

Type the weight, such as 30 g for a pan sauce.

  3. Measure cold

Measure cream straight from the fridge. Cold cream pours cleanly and whips better.

Cream Converter Formula

The Cream Converter formula is teaspoons = grams of cream ÷ 4.9.

tsp = g ÷ 4.9 | 1 tbsp = 14.7 g | 1 US cup ≈ 235 g

  • 30 g of heavy cream ÷ 14.7 = 2.04 tbsp.
  • 5 g of cream ÷ 4.9 = 1.02 tsp.
  • ½ cup of heavy cream = 24 × 4.9 = 117.6 g.

What is Cream Converter?

The Cream Converter is a calculator that converts grams of cream into teaspoons and tablespoons. Cream is the fat-rich layer skimmed from milk, sold by fat content.

US heavy cream holds at least 36% fat, UK double cream about 48%, and UK single cream about 18%. Higher fat lowers density, so the 4.9 g value fits heavy and double cream. Whipped cream roughly doubles in volume, so measure cream before whipping.

What are the uses of Cream Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Cream Converter: pan sauces, whipped cream, ganache, and soups.

  1. Pan sauces

A pan sauce for 2 steaks uses 60 g of cream, about 4 tbsp.

  2. Whipped cream

120 g of cream (about 8 tbsp) whips to roughly 240 mL.

  3. Ganache

    A 1:1 ganache with 100 g of chocolate uses 100 g of cream, about 6 ¾ tbsp.

  4. Soups

Finishing a soup with 30 g of cream takes 2 tbsp.

Cream Converter Measuring Tips

  • Heavy butterfat has a lower specific gravity than water, making cream slightly lighter by volume.
  • Weighs ~4.90 grams per level US teaspoon.
