Why Grams to Teaspoon Differs by Ingredient

A teaspoon is a unit of volume (~4.93 mL), whereas a gram is a unit of mass/weight. Therefore, 1 tsp of dense table salt weighs ~5.7g, whereas 1 tsp of airy powdered flour weighs only ~2.6g.

How Custom Ingredient Converter Works?

The Custom Ingredient Converter works with a gram-per-teaspoon value that you measure yourself. Weigh 1 level teaspoon of the ingredient, enter that weight, and the converter applies the value to any gram or teaspoon amount.

  1. Weigh one level teaspoon

Place a measuring spoon on a 0.1 g scale, press tare, fill the spoon, and sweep it level. Repeat 3 times and average the readings.

  2. Enter the custom factor

Type the average weight, for example 3.4 g, as the grams-per-teaspoon value for the ingredient.

  3. Convert any amount

Enter grams to get teaspoons, or teaspoons to get grams. The custom factor replaces the directory value for every result.

Custom Ingredient Converter Formula

The Custom Ingredient Converter formula is teaspoons = grams ÷ your measured weight of 1 tsp. The reverse formula is grams = teaspoons × your measured weight of 1 tsp.

tsp = g ÷ W₁ₜₛₚ | g = tsp × W₁ₜₛₚ (W₁ₜₛₚ = average weight of 1 level tsp)

  • A house spice blend weighs 2.4 g, 2.6 g and 2.5 g over 3 spoons. The average is 2.5 g/tsp.
  • 20 g of that blend ÷ 2.5 g/tsp = 8 tsp (2 tbsp + 2 tsp).
  • 1 ½ tsp of the blend × 2.5 g/tsp = 3.75 g.

What is Custom Ingredient Converter?

The Custom Ingredient Converter is a calculator that converts grams and teaspoons with a spoon weight you measure instead of a stored database value. The tool covers ingredients that no chart lists: a house flour blend, a ground spice mix, a regional sugar or a powdered product from a local brand.

Two products with the same name differ in weight per spoon. One brand of chili powder weighs 2.4 g per tsp and another weighs 3 g per tsp, a 25% gap. Weighing your own jar removes that gap and gives conversions that match the exact product on your shelf.

What are the uses of Custom Ingredient Converter?

There are 5 main uses of the Custom Ingredient Converter: house spice blends, flour mixes, regional products, brand-to-brand checks, and recipe development notes.

  1. House spice blends

Restaurants mix rubs and seasonings in bulk. One spoon weighing gives a factor that converts a 40 g portion into spoon counts for line cooks.

  2. Gluten-free flour mixes

Home-made blends of rice flour, tapioca and potato starch weigh between 2.6 g and 3.2 g per tsp. A measured factor fits the exact mix.

  3. Regional products

Jaggery powder, sumac, amchur and other regional products rarely appear in conversion charts. Weighing 1 tsp creates the missing value.

  4. Brand-to-brand checks

Switching brands of kosher salt or baking powder changes the weight per spoon. A new measurement keeps seasoning consistent after the switch.

  5. Recipe development notes

Developers record the measured g/tsp factor next to each test batch so later bakers reproduce the spoon amounts exactly.

Custom Ingredient Converter Measuring Tips
