How Raw Sugar Converter Works?

The Raw Sugar Converter works by dividing grams of raw sugar by 4.25 g per level US teaspoon. Raw sugars such as turbinado and demerara have large crystals that leave small gaps in the spoon.

  1. Identify the raw sugar

Turbinado, demerara and "sugar in the raw" share a coarse, golden crystal and similar spoon weight.

  2. Enter grams

Type the weight, such as 10 g for a muffin topping.

  3. Level the large crystals

Sweep the spoon flat and brush off any crystal that rolls above the rim.

Raw Sugar Converter Formula

The Raw Sugar Converter formula is teaspoons = grams of raw sugar ÷ 4.25.

tsp = g ÷ 4.25 | 1 tbsp = 12.75 g | 1 US cup ≈ 204 g

  • 5 g of turbinado sugar ÷ 4.25 = 1.18 tsp.
  • 10 g of demerara sugar ÷ 4.25 = 2.35 tsp, about 2 ⅓ tsp.
  • 1 tbsp of raw sugar = 3 × 4.25 = 12.75 g.

What is Raw Sugar Converter?

The Raw Sugar Converter is a calculator that converts grams of raw cane sugar into teaspoons. Raw sugar is partly refined cane sugar that keeps a thin film of molasses, giving a golden colour and a light caramel taste.

Raw sugar crystals measure 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm, 2 to 3 times larger than granulated crystals. Large crystals stay crunchy in the oven, which makes raw sugar the standard topping for muffins, crumbles and crème brûlée.

What are the uses of Raw Sugar Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Raw Sugar Converter: crunchy toppings, coffee and tea, crème brûlée, and pie crusts.

  1. Crunchy toppings

A dozen muffins take 15 g of turbinado sugar, about 3 ½ tsp.

  2. Coffee and tea

A brown sugar packet in cafés holds 4 g to 5 g, about 1 tsp.

  3. Crème brûlée

Each ramekin needs a 5 g layer of demerara for the torched top.

  4. Pie crusts

Bakers sprinkle 8 g of raw sugar over an egg-washed crust, about 1 ⅞ tsp.

Raw Sugar Converter Measuring Tips
