How Table Salt Converter Works?

The Table Salt Converter works by dividing grams of fine table salt by 5.69 g, the weight of 1 level US teaspoon. Table salt is the densest common spoon ingredient, at 1.15 g/mL.

  1. Use fine table salt

Select iodized or non-iodized fine table salt. Kosher, flaky and coarse salts need their own converters.

  2. Enter grams

Type the salt weight, such as 9 g for a loaf of bread.

  3. Level exactly

Sweep the spoon flat. A domed teaspoon of table salt adds about 1.1 g of salt and 450 mg of sodium.

Table Salt Converter Formula

The Table Salt Converter formula is teaspoons = grams of table salt ÷ 5.69.

tsp = g ÷ 5.69 | 1 tbsp = 17.07 g | sodium (mg) = g × 393

  • 9 g of table salt ÷ 5.69 = 1.58 tsp, about 1 ½ tsp.
  • 5 g of table salt ÷ 5.69 = 0.88 tsp, a scant 1 tsp.
  • 1 tsp of table salt × 393 = 2,236 mg of sodium.

What is Table Salt Converter?

The Table Salt Converter is a calculator that converts grams of fine table salt into teaspoons and back. Table salt is about 97–99% sodium chloride (NaCl) with small cube crystals, often with added iodine and an anti-caking agent.

Small, uniform crystals pack tightly, so table salt weighs twice as much per teaspoon as Diamond Crystal kosher salt. Recipes written for kosher salt turn too salty with table salt at the same spoon count, and the converter prevents that swap error.

What are the uses of Table Salt Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Table Salt Converter: bread baking, sodium tracking, brining, and pasta water.

  1. Bread baking

Bread uses 2% salt by flour weight. 500 g of flour needs 10 g, or 1.76 tsp of table salt.

  2. Sodium tracking

The 2,300 mg daily sodium limit equals 1.03 tsp of table salt.

  3. Brining

    A 5% brine for 1 L (4.2 cups) of water uses 50 g of salt, about 8.8 tsp or 2 ⅞ tbsp.

  4. Pasta water

1% salted pasta water uses 10 g per litre, about 1 ¾ tsp.

Table Salt Converter Measuring Tips

  • Table salt is extremely dense; 1 US teaspoon weighs an impressive 5.69 grams.
  • Using table salt in place of coarse kosher salt without weight adjustment will over-salt dishes by up to 100%.
