Why Grams to Teaspoon Differs by Ingredient

A teaspoon is a unit of volume (~4.93 mL), whereas a gram is a unit of mass/weight. Therefore, 1 tsp of dense table salt weighs ~5.7g, whereas 1 tsp of airy powdered flour weighs only ~2.6g.

How Recipe Scaling Converter Works?

The Recipe Scaling Converter works by multiplying every gram weight by a scale factor first and converting the scaled weights into teaspoons second. Scaling by weight avoids the rounding errors that build up when spoon fractions are multiplied.

  1. Pick the scale factor

    Choose ×0.5, ×2, ×3 or type a custom factor such as ×1.25 for a 10-inch pan instead of a 9-inch pan.

  2. Scale the grams

The converter multiplies each original gram weight by the factor.

  3. Convert to spoons

Each scaled weight converts to teaspoons with its own density, and the result rounds to the nearest ⅛ tsp.

Recipe Scaling Converter Formula

The Recipe Scaling Converter formula is scaled teaspoons = (original grams × scale factor) ÷ grams per teaspoon. The scale factor equals new servings ÷ original servings.

factor = new servings ÷ old servings → tsp = (g × factor) ÷ g/tsp

  • A recipe for 4 scaled to 6 servings: 6 ÷ 4 = factor 1.5.
  • 4.8 g baking powder × 1.5 = 7.2 g ÷ 4.8 = 1.5 tsp.
  • 2.6 g cinnamon × 0.5 = 1.3 g ÷ 2.6 = ½ tsp.

What is Recipe Scaling Converter?

The Recipe Scaling Converter is a calculator that resizes a recipe by any factor and returns the new amounts in grams and teaspoons. The tool keeps the ratios between ingredients fixed while the batch size changes.

Multiplying spoon fractions by hand causes errors. Tripling ¾ tsp gives 2 ¼ tsp, and multiplying ⅓ tsp by 1.5 gives ½ tsp, but few cooks work those numbers out at the counter. Scaling the gram weight first and converting once keeps leaveners and salt in the right proportion to the flour.

What are the uses of Recipe Scaling Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Recipe Scaling Converter: doubling for crowds, halving for small households, changing pan sizes, and converting yields for sale.

  1. Doubling for crowds

A cake for 8 doubles to serve 16, and 1 ½ tsp of baking powder becomes 3 tsp (1 tbsp).

  2. Halving for 1 or 2 people

Halving ¾ tsp of salt gives ⅜ tsp, measured as ¼ tsp + ⅛ tsp.

  3. Pan size changes

A 9-inch (23 cm) round pan has 64 sq in of area and a 10-inch (25 cm) pan has 79 sq in. The factor of 1.23 scales every line.

  4. Yield for sale

Cottage bakers scale a 12-cookie test batch to 60 cookies (factor 5) for market days.

Recipe Scaling Converter Measuring Tips

  • Double or halve batches cleanly while maintaining exact volumetric ratios.
  • Prevents math errors when scaling leaveners and high-potency seasonings.
